where are you?

where-are-you

have you ever tried to find yourself?
not really known where you are?

I have…I am still looking
still discovering
still uncovering.

as we begin this
turned-upside-down Lent season
maybe Ash Wednesday is a time to reflect
to really empty ourselves of

regret
indifference
apathy
ego
desires

and truly realize our mortality and humanity.

maybe it is a time to
trudge through our own ashes

the burned
marred
scorched
evidence of life

sit with them
call them by name
and
then
start
to
live
again

“Let the things of this world fall away so the soul can fall in love with God.  God only comes to fill the empty places and kenosis is necessary – to empty the soul to know the filling of God.  Lent gives me this gift: the deeper I know the pit of my sin, the deeper I drink from the draught of joy. – Ann Voskamp

maybe this is a day
to discover where we are
who we are

One day the Eternal God scooped dirt out of the ground, sculpted it into the shape we call human, breathed the breath that gives life into the nostrils of the human, and the human became a living soul. – Genesis 2:7 (the Voice)

ashes to ashes
dust to dust
from the beginning…
from the very moment of our existence
we received Breath
we have not been alone
Jesus – God with Us – from the beginning
in the Garden
before shame entered the world
when He allowed us to choose
when He called out

Where are you? (Genesis 3:9)

when we hide
when we are separated

loneliness
emptiness

“Does the emptying come only when we know how empty we are?” – Ann Voskamp

then He enters our world
the Word incarnate
an echo of creation

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God,
    and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God.
God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone. – John 1:1-4 (NLT)

love
a new kind of relationship

the journey of becoming yet always being

The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.
We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son,
Generous inside and out, true from start to finish. – John 1:14 (MSG)

infant Jesus
Jesus – the “threenager”
a pre-pubescent teen – a “tween”
Jesus the teenager
young adult
adult

starting his “ministry”

recognition
realization
celebration
a parade of palms

isolation
rejection
accusation
torture
death

“Grief is what cultivates the soil for the seeds of joy.” – Ann Voskamp

redemption
resurrection
triumph
freedom

“Think higher.  Feel deeper.” -Elie Wiesel

from the Voice in the Garden

where are you?

to the Voice
speaking in a hushed whisper
as we sit in our
brokenness
and ashes

where are you?

He calls out
we hide.
our shame
our guilt
our grief
our pain

where are you?

we are part of the celebration
the pomp and circumstance
waving the branches
saying, singing, praying
the “right” things

where are you?

we are huddled in our rooms
darkened by our guilt
our shame
our grief
our pain

in our ashes
in our dust
in our emptiness

and this day…
we decide that we
will start looking for
discovering
uncovering
where we truly are.

we are exhausted
we are tired
we are worn
we are numb.

maybe today, just maybe
we will mark our
foreheads with the
crud that has been turned to ash
as a reminder
of where we want to be.

free.
changed.
hopeful.

and the question
where are you?
becomes the answer.

Here I am.

higher, deeper grace.
