being real

real…
not fake
authentic
genuine
trustworthy
actual
sincere…

in a stable
stinky
not at all sterile

born this day
natural birth
crying
covered in mucus
breathing His first breath

eyes
fingers
toes
tiny hands…
the hands that will be pierced
the eyes that will see the “not realness” in me
the toes and feet that will walk the path that I am to follow
the hands…

the realness…
the authenticity…
the sincerity…
the love…

Don’t turn me into memory or myth
Let me be real, real
And I’ll show you what it means to love like this – Nichole Nordeman, Real

the tiny hands…
that will be a filter through which all things will pass…
the fingerprints…
that will touch every inch of things to happen…
the strength…
the warmth…
the security..
the comfort…
the realness.

Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. – the Velveteen Rabbit

o…
that I may be real.

real grace…

a night at the museum

1214141745-00

I grew up in a museum.
not literally…
things were displayed everywhere…
nicely displayed
displayed with thought and care
and with intent…
but as a kid growing up, I learned to not touch anything…
it’s almost as if there were “ropes” surrounding every little nook in our home
…keep out
…don’t touch
…these are to look at, not touch

now, I tend to enter into people’s homes
and not touch anything…
not even look at their stuff…

strange, I know…

I had the extreme privilege to have my best friend and her
13 month-old daughter over for dinner the other night…
I still live with my dad, the “rope-guy” but he was out of state,
so, with a newly-walking-a-little-over-one-year-old in
“the museum”
I wanted to respect my parents’ things, and yet not be over-bearing…

I am pleased to report that the baby survived her first trip to a museum
without incident
without breakage…
yay!!

then I started thinking about deep things…
(it’s just the way I work)
like God and “ropes” and museums.

do I have a “do not touch” mentality with Him?
do I have a form over function relationship with Him?
do I have a “keep out” policy with Him?
or maybe I have erected ropes to only allow Him access so far to my life…
or maybe I see Him as having ropes around Him…only allowing me access so far, so close to Him…

“Everyone sees what you appear to be, few experience what you really are.”
— Niccolò Machiavelli

maybe I have that mindset with others…
maybe I look like I have it all together…
but what is beyond the ropes?

maybe I need to spend a night in God’s museum…
exploring…
touching…
jumping the ropes (albeit invisible)…
looking…
seeking…
embracing…
sitting in wonder…
feeling…

“What’s the whole point of being pretty on the outside when you’re so ugly on the inside?”
— Jess C. Scott

The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. – 1 Samuel 16:7 (NLT)

waiting in a season of advent…
of anticipation…
of wanting…
of waiting…
in tension between what is and what is to come.

grace explored…

we are lacy

lacy

lace…
patterned, openwork fabric…
dainty…
delicate…

does this describe you?

or maybe fragile…
solid…
strong…

I would not choose the word “lacy” to describe anything about myself…
and yet…
we are.

some lovely young ladies with whom I work and I spent some time together a couple of days ago.
eating…
laughing…
having “all the jokes”…
and being creative as well.
jokingly, the conversation evolved into the four of us actually being one person…Lacey
each of us bringing our own personality to the table
and yet making up one person…so it became – “We are Lacey”

and when I thought of lace…intricate, delicate, patterned, open…
I was reminded that perhaps we truly are lacy.

patterned and created….You have approached even the smallest details with excellence (Psalm 139)

delicate…But this beautiful treasure is contained in us—cracked pots made of earth and clay—so that the transcendent character of this power will be clearly seen as coming from God and not from us.  – 2 Corinthians 4:1 (the Voice)

No creature can hide from God: God sees all. Everyone and everything is exposed, opened for His inspection; and He’s the One we will have to explain ourselves to. – Hebrews 4:13 (the Voice)

sometimes we are veiled…
attempting to cover and hide parts of us – the parts we don’t particularly care for
or the parts of us that speak out of turn
or the parts we are ashamed of
or the parts we don’t like

veiled in lace…
open, delicate, intricate…

there is a bit of transparency in lace.
covered…but not hidden
veiled…but not invisible

vulnerable…
risky…
courageous…
brave…

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity. If we want greater clarity in our purpose or deeper and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path.” – Brene Brown

perhaps a sense of “laciness” is what we are striving for…

For we are the product of His hand, heaven’s poetry etched on lives, created in the Anointed, Jesus, to accomplish the good works God arranged long ago. – Ephesians 2:10 (the Voice)

perhaps we are called to be lacy…
to be transparent…
to be vulnerable…
to be authentic…
to take a risk with relationships…

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.”  – Brene Brown

perhaps we are called to be lacy…
to cultivate a place where love and grace
creativity and change can grow.

we truly are “heaven’s poetry”…
and perhaps that looks like lace.

beautiful, lacy grace…
