catching a whiff of the Spirit

aromas….
odors…
the smell of athletes after a workout or practice…
the sweet fragrance of a rose…
the lingering aroma of vanilla and coconut…
the earthy odor of kiddos…
the tantalizing aroma of a festival – the fried everything – corn dogs, fries, elephant ears, fried cheesecake…
the sweet smell of apple dumplings and apple fritters…
the innocence of a baby…

the lightness…
the heaviness…
the oppressive and the freeing…

but…
what about smelling God?
does He have an odor?
does He have an identifiable smell?

I think that perhaps He does…

the whiff of the Spirit…

sure, the fragrance my not be easily “smellable”
but it is palpable…able to be perceived.

the whiff of the Spirit…

in the courage of new parents facing a tragedy..
in the delicious oranges and yellows of the sunrise…
in the smile of a friend…
in the giggle of a sweet little one…
in the witnessing of the start of emotional healing…

in finally doing what you were made to do.

and aren’t we the only whiff of the Spirit that some will ever catch a glimpse of?

the way we talk to each other
the way we deal with conflict
the manner in which we handle ourselves in the middle of crises
the language we use
the things we talk about (or even who we talk about)
how we react when someone “pees in our sandbox”

o, that I may emanate
sweetness
love
kindness
peace
grace
joy
generosity
gentleness

o, that when I┬ápass by, the Spirit’s aroma lingers
that God is proud
that the essence of Who Jesus is can be seen

that I may in fact become the whiff of the Spirit that can be grasped and caught…

fragrant grace.
