going through the motions

“Somewhere along the way, most of us pick us bad habits of extracting from the Bible what we pretentiously call ‘spiritual principle,’ or ‘moral guidelines,’ or ‘theological truths,’ and then corseting ourselves in them in order to force a godly shape on our lives.  That’s a mighty uncomfortable way to go about improving our condition.” – Eugene Peterson, Leap Over a Wall

Wanting our lives to be different.  Learning.  Gleaning.  Presupposing.  Attending services.  Participating, even leading.  We learn the routine.  We follow the guidelines.  We look the part.

But, deep inside, confusion reigns.  Pretense.  Imagined calmness.  Discontent.  Chains that bind.  Longing for something more.  Longing for someone.

Peace.  Freedom.  Understanding.  Honesty.  Truth.  Love.  Acceptance.  Radical, genuine transformation.  New clothes.  A robe of righteousness.  Allowing God to make me right with Himself.

Relinquishing.  Embracing grace.  Living liberated.  Realizing that we are helpless in enhancing our own situation.

What a paramount discovery!

Change is on the horizon…take a step of faith and fall in line with the motion of mercy.

grace.
